Dental Sealants

Our dental team at Citrus Smiles, led by Dr. Aurora, focuses on implementing preventive measures from a young age to avoid common dental issues. That’s why we offer dental sealants in Murphy, Wylie, Heath and Lucas TX that form a protective barrier against harmful oral bacteria. With this technique, we can help you prevent the risk of cavities for many years!

Dental Sealants

What Are Dental Sealants

The chewing surfaces of our posterior teeth (premolars and molars) have more grooves and fissures than the anterior teeth.

Due to this reason, they are more susceptible to cavities, as small food particles often remain stuck in these grooves. This offers an ideal medium for oral bacteria to grow, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

We can prevent the formation of cavities by coating these tooth surfaces with dental sealants. Sealants are tooth-colored coatings that are applied on the chewing surfaces of posterior teeth to prevent cavities. They fill the grooves and crevices, forming a protective barrier against caries-causing bacteria.

At What Age Should Children Get Dental Sealants

Children are often more likely to develop dental cavities than adults. For this reason, our dentists suggest getting sealants at an early age to keep their smile free of cavities.

You can bring your child for this treatment as soon as their first permanent molars erupt (usually around the age of 6 or 7 years.)

The procedure is completely safe and painless, so you can rest assured that your kid will remain comfortable during the visit.

Can Adults Get Dental Sealants

Many people assume that sealants are only a part of pediatric dentistry. The truth is that this treatment can benefit children and adults alike. We particularly recommend tooth sealants for adults who are at high risk of cavities.

By coating the susceptible tooth surfaces, we can help prevent dental caries in the long run.

What Is the Treatment Process

The application of sealants is a simple and easy process that usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. It is completely non-invasive and painless, so we do not administer local anesthesia for this procedure.

First, our dentist will thoroughly clean and rinse the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. We will then apply an acidic gel to roughen the tooth surface, as it helps adhere the sealant to the tooth. Next, we will apply a thin coating of dental sealants on the prepared areas and cure it with a special light.

After the procedure, we will check your bite to ensure there are no high spots. Even with dental sealants, it is crucial to brush and clean your teeth on a daily basis.
