A Team You Can Trust With Something This Important

Dr. Gur Simran Aurora, DDS, MPH, spent years building a practice around the idea that good dental care should be available to everyone, including people who are scared to come in. His public health background and community service history weren’t accidental. They reflect a practice philosophy that takes patient comfort seriously, not as a marketing angle but as a clinical priority.

Dr. Mahima Gupta, DDS, FAGD, brings over 700 hours of continuing education to her work, with a focus that includes general dentistry, implants, and endodontics, all procedures where IV sedation is sometimes the difference between a patient getting the care they need and going another year without it. When you’re sedated at Citrus Smiles, you’re in the hands of people who have done this many times and take your safety and comfort seriously.

What Is IV Sedation Dentistry?

IV sedation dentistry, or intravenous sedation, is a method of administering anti-anxiety medication directly into the bloodstream through a small IV line placed in the hand or arm. Unlike general anesthesia, IV sedation does not render you fully unconscious. Instead, it brings you to a deeply relaxed, semi-aware state often described as “twilight sleep.” You can still respond to instructions, but you are largely unaware of what’s happening and will have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. It is safe, fast-acting, and precisely adjustable throughout the appointment.

Who Is IV Sedation Right For?

IV sedation is the deepest form of sedation we offer at Citrus Smiles, and it’s not always necessary. But for certain patients and procedures, it’s genuinely the right call. We may recommend IV sedation if you:

  • Have severe dental anxiety or a dental phobia that has prevented you from receiving regular care
  • Need multiple complex procedures completed in one appointment
  • Are undergoing oral surgery, implant placement, or other involved treatments
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes extended treatment difficult
  • Have tried other sedation methods and found they weren’t sufficient
  • Have significant difficulty getting numb from local anesthetic alone

Benefits of IV Sedation

IV sedation isn’t right for every case, but the benefits for appropriate treatments include:

  • Rapid Onset: Relaxation begins within minutes of administration
  • Precise Control: Medication levels can be adjusted in real time throughout the procedure
  • Deep Anxiety Relief: Ideal for patients who would otherwise find treatment unbearable
  • Amnesic Effect: Most patients have no memory of the procedure
  • More Efficient Treatment: Dentists can work more thoroughly when a patient is fully relaxed
  • Reduced Gag Reflex: Making complex work more manageable

How IV Sedation Works at Citrus Smiles

Step 1: Pre-Sedation Evaluation

Before your IV sedation appointment, we complete a comprehensive review of your medical history, current medications, and overall health. This is not a formality. Some medical conditions and drug combinations require us to adjust our approach. We’ll also give you clear pre-procedure instructions to follow, including fasting guidelines and clothing recommendations.

Step 2: IV Placement and Sedation Administration

On the day of your appointment, a thin needle is placed into a vein in your hand or arm, and connected to an IV line. The sedative medication flows steadily from there. Most patients feel the effects within a minute or two. The medication produces a deep calm, and the amnesic properties of IV sedation mean that even if you’re dimly aware of things happening around you, you won’t retain a memory of the procedure.

Step 3: Continuous Monitoring

Throughout the procedure, our team monitors your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation using specialized equipment. IV sedation is not something we administer and walk away from. Every adjustment is tracked, every vital sign is watched, and our team is present and attentive from the moment the IV goes in until you’re cleared to go home.

Step 4: Recovery and Discharge

When your procedure is complete, we stop the sedation and monitor you through the early stages of recovery. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for several hours. The sedative takes time to fully clear your system. Plan for a day of rest. Most patients feel significantly better by the following morning.

IV Sedation vs. Other Sedation Options

IV sedation is not the right fit for everyone, and we don’t recommend it when a lighter option would serve you equally well. Here’s a brief comparison:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Lightest option, wears off quickly, good for mild anxiety and shorter procedures
  • Oral Sedation: Moderate relaxation via a pill taken before the appointment, no IV required
  • IV Sedation: Deepest option, fast-acting, adjustable, best for significant anxiety or complex procedures

If you’re not sure which is the right option for you, that’s exactly what our pre-procedure consultation is for. We’ll help you figure it out.
